Our bingo session on Saturday 7th July went well with all present having a great time. There will be no bingo during August but it will return on Saturday, 1st September with doors opening at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start. Tea and coffee will be available in the Reading Room. For further information, please contact Carol on 07795 264478.There are a number of fundraising events in the pipeline, so look out for further information in future magazines but, in the meantime, don’t forget to make a note of the date for Somerset Opera’s performance of The Mikado – Saturday 30th March 2019. A bit of a mystery – on Tuesday 10th July it was discovered that some of the screws securing the heavy bolt to the front door of the Victoria Rooms had been removed. If anyone saw anything suspicious in the couple of days before the 10th, or know what might have happened, please give Philip a call on 400609. Many thanks. Our Bingo evening on the 8th April was well attended and much enjoyed by all. The next session will be on Saturday 5th May, so do come along and join in the fun.Hopefully, the weather over the May Bank Holiday will be good for the Milverton Street Fair on Monday 7th May. As usual, the Victoria Rooms will be a hive of activity, with many stalls in the hall selling a variety of lovely products. Delicious cakes and light refreshments will be available all day in the Reading Room and “The Old Vic” will be on the forecourt selling beer, wine, cider and soft drinks. A number of local musicians will be entertaining the crowds, so come along and enjoy a drink while sheltering from the sun under the new gazebo and listen to the music – what better way to spend a Monday!Talking of gazebos, these are available to hire at a reasonable cost. So, if you are holding a family party or having a BBQ and would like to hire one or more, please contact Philip on 400609 for more details and to check availability.There is still just time to register for our 100 Club. The cost is just £12.00 per year and there is a monthly prize of £50.00. Monthly Community Market cancelled
Due to adverse weather conditions, it has been decided to cancel this month's market on 3rd March. Normal service will be resumed on 7th April.
Street Fair Cafe - Victoria Rooms
The Street Fair will soon be upon us! Monday 7th May is no doubt already in your diary. We are therefore planning ahead and appealing for help in the Cafe in the Reading Rooms (including washing up, serving refreshmets, taking the money etc.). We are also collecting donations of food items to sell in the usual way (cakes, savory snacks as well as gluten-free items). If you have experience of making gluten-free items, please do make some for us - they are always well-received! We will be putting up a notice in the Victoria Rooms kitchen where you can put your name down to let us know what you will be able to donate. Our second bingo session on Saturday, 3rd February was enjoyed by all who came along and over £230.00 was raised towards Victoria Rooms’ funds. This will now become a regular event on the first Saturday every month so, if you haven’t been before and would like to try your luck, why not come along on Saturday 3rd March and join in the fun?Another way of supporting our village hall, and also being in with the chance of winning the £50.00 monthly prize, is to enter our 100 Club. Our AGM was held on Tuesday 9th January and all the present committee confirmed they were willing to stand for a further year, for which many thanks. However, the committee is always happy to welcome new blood and if anyone feels they could spare some time to help with the running of our village hall, please contact Philip on 400609 for more information on how you could get involved. Also, over £70.00 was made for Victoria Rooms’ funds.Bingo also made a welcome return to the Victoria Rooms on 16th December with the first “eyes down” for a number of years. A great time was had by all who attended, raising nearly £350.00 for our funds. Bingo will now become a regular addition to the Victoria Rooms’ events calendar with the next session taking place on Saturday 3rd February. JANUARY 2018 NEWS
Our Christmas Quiz on the 8th December was a great success. The Victoria Rooms was full of happy folk, eating, drinking laughing and getting their little grey cells around Gwil’s thought-provoking questions! The quiz was won by the AmDram team, but it was a hard fought contest. Grateful thanks to Chris and her team for all their hard work and a special thanks to Gwil and Margaret Wren for doing such an excellent job (as always!) as quizmaster and scorer.If you haven’t got your 2018 Milverton calendar – it is now too late as they have all been sold. Many thanks to all who purchased calendars and to Lindsay Fortune for his excellent salesmanship and the beautiful photos – (although he says he didn’t take the historic ones!)Our AGM will be held in the Reading Room on Tuesday 9th January 2018 starting promptly at 7.00pm. All are welcome to attend this open meeting and raise any points they wish to make. The committee are always looking for new ideas on how our village hall can be improved. Volunteers to become “Friends of the Victoria Rooms” are also welcomed – if you feel you could spare a few hours every so often to help maintain or run our village hall, please contact Maggie on 400142 and she will be happy to give you some more detailsAs mentioned last month, Somerset Opera are returning to the Victoria Rooms on Saturday 24th March 2018 and will be performing Ruddigore by Gilbert and Sullivan. The story takes place in the Cornish seaside village of Rederring! - the only village with a corps of professional bridesmaids. Sweet Rose Maybud, the heroine, is incapable of making any decisions without referring to her book of etiquette. She falls for Robin Oakapple but is chased by Dick Dauntless, a young sailor. There are witches’ curses to be untangled, long lost lovers to be reunited and a portrait gallery of vocal portraits to be placated. Typical Gilbertian frolics! Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. There will be a bar. West Somerset Lottery Draw
The first draw in the Smerset West Lottery took place yesterday. Apparently, there were 34 winners, the Victoria Rooms has 25 ticket-owning supporters, one of whom won £25.00!! That’s pretty good odds. Support the Victoria Rooms and sign up to buy tickets on line now!
